In Case of Emergency, Would Your Child Know What to Do?
We teach our children from a very early age that if there is an emergency, they should call 911. However, there are many things about this simple statement that don’t go quite far enough. For example, when you call 911, you will be asked LOTS of questions. The caller needs to be able to identify their location, the emergency at hand, and provide details as well as listen to instructions. Many times, our children get the false sense that if they simply dial the numbers, help will arrive but they don't understand that many times they may actually be directed to perform steps to help until a first responder arrives.
Are They Really Prepared?
Let me share a scenario with you. A young lady was able to save her grandmother's life because she knew what to do. While visiting her grandmother and having a nice lunch, she noticed that grandma was not eating with her usual manners. Not only was food falling from her grandmother's mouth, her grandma kept missing the food on her plate, stabbing the table with the fork instead. With keen observation, the young lady asked her grandmother if she was okay. She noted that grandma seemed unable to speak or respond. It was at this time that the young lady sprang into action and picked up the phone.
Luckily, the young lady in this story had some life skills drilled into her. She had been taught to remain calm and answer the questions asked by the 911 operator. The young lady made her grandmother comfortable and provided the address so that medics could arrive quickly. She was even able to provide the first responders with her grandmother’s current medications. It was the young lady’s fast thinking, calm demeanor, and life skills training that saved her grandmother’s life when she had a stroke.
